&rew Wilson

April is &rew Wilson month.  A talented artist with a penchant for hardly dressed girls, video games and pop culture.  Talented artist and all around swell guy unless you are one of the few who think he’s a heartless bastard.  To those people  I say Good day to you…I SAID  GOOD DAY!!!   &rew was able to take some time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions.

What is your name?

My name is Andrew Wilson.  I go by &Rew online because, well, if you google Andrew Wilson you’d find that we (Andrew Wilsons) could rival the populations of some small countries.  & is “and” + “rew” is “Andrew”.  As obvious as that is – most people don’t get it.

What is your quest?

My quest is to destroy the universe by infecting everyone with my designs.  If that doesn’t happen, keeping a roof over my head and being well fed isn’t a bad second.

What is your favorite color?

Right now I like black and bright @ss pink.  Next year I think it will be RGB [0,255,255].  That is yet to be seen.

What’s the deal with your art?

I like to draw cute jellybean like creatures and silhouettes of girls.  They seem opposite and as I’m bored with one I switch tracks.  I also like to load my art with pop culture characters and or video game references.  I love games.

Tell me about some of your favorite games.

Zelda (any), Metroid (more the side scrollers or Metrovania stuff), I like independent games gone mainstream too, like Cave Story or World of Goo  and old school adventures like the Quests (Space, Hero’s, and King’s).  I’ve played everything from lunar lander on the apple II to GoW3 on the PS3.  That means that A). I’m a real VG nerd and B). I’m old as fuck.

Why are you so interested in painting jellybean like characters?

It’s like exercising demons.  They’re in my skull with little hammers and picks, mining their way from my brain into this universe.  Every once in a while, one of them pops out and I’m in a convenient place to capture him/her in art, be it on a watercolor board or in photoshop.

Do you have any advice for up and coming artists?

YES.  People love to tell you what to do in the art world.  There’s a fine line between understanding criticism and becoming a drone for somebody else.  If people tell you that they don’t like something about your art that you think defines you, sometimes you have to tell them to go fuck themselves in your head – just smile and nod.  People mean well but everybody is a critic.  Don’t take it personally.  Keep doing what you like because in the end everything falls apart anyways.  Much of art is about joy and invention – don’t let criticism or compliments direct you unless those are implications you’ve really considered.
