A bit about yourself?

My name is Evan Yarbrough, though my stripper name is Evanimal, and I am an illustrator based in Santa Monica, CA. I attended the Savannah College of Art and Design for 5 years and have been working as an illustrator and designer out here in California ever since. I live with my sweet thang, a dog named Harvey, and two cats. I strive to work as hard as I possibly can on getting better and more innovative in my approach every day.

Your medium of choice?

I mostly work digitally on a Cintiq, but still use a lot of good, hard traditional materials and methods to compliment the swift ease that technology waives in front of my face. I have found that no matter the awesomeness of a photoshop brush or time saving grace of a distress layer might be, nothing beats going old school.

What is your preferred style and where do you see it going?

I have found myself working in the realm of dark comedy and sinister action. My background is in Sequential Art as well as being raised in the ’80’s with a steady comic book habit, so I feel like there is a lot of comic influence in my work. I’ve tried to distance my style lately, taking new approaches on comfortable methods, and hopefully evolving my style into something more mature and timeless. I mean, there’s still going to be robot hookers turing tricks for meth, but you know, all grown up.

What fields of the creative world do you work in the most?

As of right now, I am firmly planted in the apparel industry, as well as the web world. I love designing shirts, hoodies, jeans, bags, shoes, etc.. because it’s a way for illustration to get a chance at really getting seen by a mass audience, as well as being commercially viable and still incredibly creative. A long time ago, I had to build my own portfolio website from scratch, and in doing so, learned a good deal of web design and development, and now years later, have a pretty thriving web design business on the side. I enjoy the balance of left and right brain thinking when working on a site. There’s so much complexity and planning, it’s like building a house.

Whats on the horizon for you?

I’ve got a full schedule right now, a delicious mix of apparel, illustration, and web design, so I am treating each project as if it were my only one, and hopefully growing with every client that I take on. I am illustrating for an animation studio for a pretty major commercial, so that’s really exciting, and I’m working with a lot of reputable apparel brands, so more of my stuff should be in major retailers soon.
